F is for Freedom! Day Three

Welcome to Sacramento!!  Where a simple idea can become a powerful legislation and affect the lives of all 38 million of us; the Californians.  The students were asked to explore their state capital today and imagine not having those freedoms that our country has fought so hard to protect.  While we often take it for granted, the students had no trouble making a list of some of the wonderful freedoms we can enjoy simply by being an American citizen.  First, we stopped at the California Museum and had a look into the lives of the Indian tribes in California.  We were blessed to have with us Chairman James Ramos, a father to one of our 6th graders and also a person who has been instrumental in creating the California Mission Indian Exhibit at the California Museum.  After enjoying the rich tribal histories, we moved on to the state capital building.  Here the students had the opportunity to meet with Senator Emmerson and Assemblyman Morrell from the California State Senate.  After hearing them speak, our students were really able to see what freedom really means.  For some, it means having the choice as to what restaurant to eat at, or where the would like to shop next.  Simple freedoms like these often seem so commonplace that we forget that not everyone shares in our luxuries.  Being able to discuss these things with the Congressmen helped the students gain a better perspective on what it really means to be a servant of the people and what painstaking effort goes into the continued protection of freedoms that happens every day on that Senate floor.

"But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves of sin, you have come to obey from your heart the form of doctrine to which you were delivered. You have been set free from sin and have become servants of righteousness." -Romans 6:17-18
